Wine collections represent years of careful selection, proper storage, and significant investment. A single afternoon in a hot moving truck can undo all of it. In Miami, where summer temperatures regularly push past 95 degrees and humidity hangs around 80%, moving wine safely requires specialized knowledge, equipment, and timing that go well beyond what standard movers provide.

Why Wine Is So Vulnerable During a Move

Wine is affected by three things during transport: temperature, vibration, and orientation. Heat accelerates chemical reactions inside the bottle, causing premature aging and off flavors. Temperatures above 70 degrees start the damage process, and above 80 degrees it accelerates rapidly. Vibration disturbs sediment in aged wines, affecting clarity and taste. Laying bottles flat protects corks from drying out, but shifting and jostling can push wine past the cork seal. South Florida's climate makes every one of these risks worse.

Pre-Move Assessment of the Collection

Before packing a single bottle, our move manager catalogs the collection. We note the total bottle count, identify particularly valuable bottles, and record the current cellar temperature and humidity settings. This information shapes the transport plan. A 50-bottle collection handled differently than a 500-bottle cellar in a Coral Gables estate. For insured collections, we cross-reference the inventory with any existing appraisals or cellar management records.

Packing Methods

Each bottle gets individually wrapped in foam sleeves that provide both cushioning and thermal insulation. Bottles are packed upright in partitioned cases that prevent contact between them. For especially valuable bottles, we use molded foam inserts custom-fitted to the bottle shape. Cases are then placed inside insulated shipping containers that maintain a stable temperature during transport. We never use newspaper or standard packing paper, which offer no thermal protection and can transfer ink to labels.

Climate-Controlled Transport

For large collections, we use temperature-controlled vehicles that maintain cellar-appropriate conditions throughout the move. The vehicle's interior stays between 55 and 60 degrees regardless of what's happening outside. For smaller collections, insulated containers with gel packs maintain safe temperatures for the duration of a local Miami move. We monitor temperatures throughout transport with digital thermometers placed inside the containers.

Timing the Move

We schedule wine transport during the coolest hours of the day, typically departing before 8 AM during summer months. The goal is to minimize the time wine spends outside a climate-controlled environment. For local moves within Miami-Dade County, we can often complete the wine transfer separately from the main household move, allowing us to optimize timing without being constrained by the furniture schedule.

Setting Up the New Cellar

At the destination, the cellar or wine storage system needs to be running and at the proper temperature before the collection arrives. Our move manager coordinates with the homeowner and any wine storage contractors to confirm the new cellar is operational. Bottles go directly from the insulated transport containers into the new storage, minimizing temperature fluctuation. We organize bottles according to the owner's system, whether by region, vintage, varietal, or drinking window.

Handling Wine Walls and Display Storage

Many luxury homes in Brickell and Miami Beach feature glass-enclosed wine walls rather than traditional cellars. These units are both refrigeration equipment and display furniture. Moving them requires disconnecting refrigeration lines, securing glass panels, and handling the unit as a large, fragile appliance. At the destination, a refrigeration technician may need to reconnect and recharge the system. We coordinate this service as part of the move.
