# Moving a Refrigerator Safely Down Stairs

Getting a refrigerator down a staircase is one of the most physically demanding tasks in a residential move. You're dealing with a 250- to 400-pound appliance that's tall, top-heavy, and easy to lose control of on an incline. Two-story homes are everywhere in neighborhoods like Kendall, Cutler Bay, and Homestead, and many of them have the kitchen on the second floor. Here's how we handle these moves safely.

Why Staircase Fridge Moves Go Wrong

The physics work against you. A refrigerator's center of gravity sits about two-thirds of the way up, which means it wants to tip forward when angled on stairs. One misstep, one moment of lost grip, and the fridge falls. It damages the stairs, smashes into the wall, and potentially injures whoever is at the bottom.

We've responded to jobs where homeowners tried this themselves and ended up with a refrigerator wedged sideways in a stairwell, drywall punched through on both sides, and the banister ripped off the wall. At that point, they're paying for the move, the repairs, and sometimes a replacement fridge.

Equipment You Need

Appliance Dolly

A standard hand truck won't cut it. You need an appliance dolly with a wide toe plate, heavy-duty straps, and rubber wheels that grip stairs without marking them. Professional-grade appliance dollies handle up to 800 pounds and have a design that distributes the load during staircase descents.

Moving Straps

Ratchet straps secure the fridge to the dolly so it can't shift during the descent. We also use forearm lifting straps that redistribute the weight from your arms to your legs and core, reducing the chance of back injuries.

Floor and Stair Protection

Each step needs padding to prevent the dolly wheels from chipping the stair nosing. Moving blankets taped to each step work well. The walls along the staircase need corner guards or blankets hung over the railing and walls.

The Step-by-Step Process

Prep the Fridge

The refrigerator should be completely defrosted, emptied, and cleaned. Remove all shelves, drawers, and bins. Disconnect the water line and tape the power cord to the back. Secure the doors with appliance tape or ratchet straps so they can't swing open on the stairs.

Clear and Protect the Stairway

Remove any artwork, light fixtures, or decorations from the stairway walls. Hang moving blankets over the railing. Pad each step. Make sure the landing at the top and bottom is clear so the crew has room to maneuver.

Tilt and Strap to the Dolly

Position the appliance dolly behind the fridge. Tilt the fridge back onto the dolly's toe plate, about a 30-degree angle. Secure it with at least two ratchet straps: one at the top and one at the midsection. The fridge should not move at all on the dolly when you push or pull on it.

The Descent

This takes two people minimum. The person at the bottom controls the speed, while the person at the top guides and stabilizes. Lower the dolly one step at a time. The bottom person holds the dolly handle and leans it back slightly so the fridge doesn't tip forward. Never rush. Each step should be deliberate, with both people communicating.

On longer staircases, take breaks every few steps. Fatigue leads to mistakes, and Miami's heat and humidity accelerate exhaustion, especially if you're in a house without AC running during the move.

Transition at the Landing

If there's a turn in the staircase (common in two-story homes throughout Miami Lakes and Pembroke Pines), you'll need to pivot the dolly at the landing. This is the trickiest part. Lift and rotate rather than dragging, since dragging damages the landing floor and can throw off the balance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • 1Trying it alone. A solo person cannot safely control a 300-pound fridge on stairs. Period.
  • 2Using a regular dolly. Standard dollies aren't built for the weight or the angle. They tip.
  • 3Going too fast. Speed kills on stairs. One step at a time.
  • 4Forgetting to secure doors. A swinging fridge door shifts the center of gravity and catches on walls.
  • 5Skipping stair protection. Replacement stair treads cost hundreds of dollars.
