# Moving a Hot Tub Through a Fence or Gate

If your hot tub sits in a fenced backyard, getting it out is usually the hardest part of the entire move. Miami properties are full of privacy fences, pool enclosures, and narrow gates that were never designed to fit a 7-foot-wide spa through them. The tub probably went in before the fence was completed, or it was craned over the top during the original installation. Either way, you need a plan.

Measuring Before Anything Else

Grab a tape measure and check every opening between the tub and the street. Standard residential gates in Miami are typically 36 to 48 inches wide. A small 2-3 person hot tub might be 5 feet across, while a 6-person model can run 7 feet or more. Even turned on its side, most hot tubs won't fit through a standard gate.

Measure the gate width, the height clearance (if there's an overhead beam or archway), and the depth of the opening. Then measure your tub in every orientation: flat, on its side, and on its end. Sometimes tipping the tub on its narrowest edge creates just enough clearance to squeeze through.

Option 1: Remove a Fence Section

This is the most common solution for Miami hot tub moves. Removing one or two fence panels creates a wide enough opening to roll the tub through on dollies.

For aluminum or vinyl fences (popular throughout Kendall, Doral, and Homestead), panels are typically screwed or clipped to posts. A skilled crew can remove a panel in 15 to 20 minutes and reinstall it after the tub is through.

For wood fences, you may need to unscrew or pry off individual pickets and the horizontal rails between two posts. This takes a bit longer but is still manageable. Mark the pieces as you remove them so reassembly goes quickly.

For chain link fences, the mesh can be detached from the top rail and one post, rolled back, and reattached later. This works but can leave the fence slightly loose if not done carefully.

If your fence was recently installed or is under warranty, check with the installer about removal and reinstallation before you start pulling panels.

Option 2: Go Over the Fence

When fence removal isn't practical (like a concrete block wall or a situation where the fence belongs to a neighbor), going over the top is the alternative. This usually means hiring a crane or boom truck.

A crane operator can lift the tub straight up and over the fence, swing it to the driveway, and set it on the truck. For properties in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and other neighborhoods with mature landscaping and tight lot lines, a crane is often the cleanest option. No fence damage, no landscaping destruction, and no wrestling a 700-pound tub through a narrow space.

The trade-off is cost. Crane rental adds several hundred dollars to the move, but it can actually save money when you factor in the time and potential damage costs of trying to force the tub through a tight opening.

Option 3: Modify the Gate

Some homeowners choose to widen their gate before the move. If you're already planning fence modifications at your new home, this can be a practical long-term investment. A wider gate makes future maintenance, furniture deliveries, and landscaping equipment access easier too.

In Miami, gate modifications on properties with an HOA may require approval before work begins. Check your community guidelines early.

Working with Pool Enclosures

Screened-in pool cages are everywhere in South Florida. These aluminum-framed screen enclosures usually have a single door that's nowhere near wide enough for a hot tub. The options here are:

  • 1Remove a screen panel: The screen mesh can be cut and reattached, or an entire panel frame can be unbolted. This is the least expensive approach.
  • 2Remove a structural section: For larger tubs, you may need to remove a section of the aluminum frame itself. This requires a screen enclosure contractor.
  • 3Crane over the enclosure: If the tub went in before the cage was built, a crane might be the only way out.
